INTRODUCTION:
by DIANNE JACOBS THOMPSON (under
construction)
1979 Around January of that year, I went
home to die.
..cont.
I was diagnosed with stage 2 stomach cancer, chronic bronchitis,
acutely infected ovarian cysts, arthritis, sciatica, low thyroid,
anemia and a heart condition. Besides that I had chronic ear infections
and long-standing clinical depression. The late Dr.
Harold Dick, N.D., known as a "naturopathic oncology pioneer"
cured me in 5 weeks. It required the diagnosis (the Carroll
Food Test) of digestive enzyme
deficiency food intolerances which most people have and few
know about, and it also identified the primary tissue
salt deficiency, along with treatment with glandular
protomorphogens to restore glandular health, and Constitutional
Hydrotherapy to bring about detoxification, to stimulate blood
circulation and the activity of the vital organs and to jump-start
the immune system. It turned out to be the basic foundation of the
most successful healing system I've ever witnessed.
1986 My 5-year-old daughter was forcibly vaccinated
and immediately developed a flesh-eating
infection so virulent that my husband and I became infected
from contact. Naturopathic medicine brought us back from the brink.
Later that year
we were introduced to escharotic
cancer salves and treated a dog tumor, my husband's cirrhosis
of the liver, various skin lesions, moles, fungal infections, and
a lump in my thigh. It eventually
helped clear up the remaining symptoms from my husband's flesh-eating
infection after he was forced to submit to antibiotic treatment
which made a mess of it. There was much more, gallbladder
problems in 1999, adrenal
deficiency 2001, injury in 2002, arthritis,
diabetes, and other issues between
2003-2012, including glaucoma--cured.
This is
why I research and write about alternative medicine. It's a debt. |
"Elderberries have long held a fascination among those who have looked
for
health benefits amidst the natural foods and herbs of the earth. They
have
developed a widespread reputation for curing a great number of health
problems. In folk medicine books and journals both here and abroad there
are
countless articles and anecdotes which concern this amazing plant.
Among the folklore (remember
that folklore is NOT science) about elder-
berries are stories of relief from countless ailments including constipation,
colic, diarrhea, colds, rheumatism, flu, sore throats, rhinitis, fever,
irritated
eyes, flatulence, etc. The use of the elder tree is involved in each
of these
conditions and more according to the literature. Virtually every part
of the
elder tree has been used in some form or another, including the bark,
the
leaves, the blossoms, and the fruit.
These traditions have been
passed along for some 2500 years, and have
been included in the writing of Plinius and Hippocrates as far back
as the 5th
Century BC. Among the things noted in the modern literature concerning
the
fruit of the elder tree are the identification of its high albumin content,
its
richness in vitamins B1, B2, B6, calcium, phosphorus, and certain
bioflavonoids in high concentrations.
Elderberry products have
been used in teas, cosmetics, herbal baths, infusions, ointments, and
other forms in the attempt to discover relief from various
sufferings and ailments. Many of these products have provided significant
relief for those who have used them. However, there has always been
a
somewhat mystical approach to the effects of elderberries - as there
have been with many other "health foods". As a result, some
people are
inclined to both exaggerate or denigrate the achieved results, leaving
many
people wondering if they really work.
As a result of modern technology
and scientific research which has been
done by Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, PhD, (in Virology) at Hadassah-
Hebrew University Medical Center at Ein Karem in Israel beginning in
1983
and continuing to the present, evidence is now available that is beginning
to
identify some of the attributes of the elderberry.
Through Dr. Mumcuoglu's research,
and the research of others working
alongside her, a careful study was made of the proteins contained in
the fruit
of the black elderberry, sambucus nigra-L. In the course of this study
the
proteins were isolated and the active elements were examined.
During this process Dr. Mumcuoglu
discovered and isolated two active
principles which were first tested against the influenza virus, based
upon the
history of claims made concerning elderberry in folk medicine. These
tests
demonstrated that these two active principles effectively combated the
flu virus. This led to further research.
It is established science that viruses cannot replicate themselves on
their
own. To do this they must invade living cells and alter their function.
This
means that if you could prevent the virus from entering a cell you would
defeat it. The flu virus invades a cell by puncturing the wall with
tiny
spikes called hemaglutinin which cover the surface of the virus. What
Dr. Mumcuoglu discovered in the laboratory is exciting. The two
active ingredients she isolated from the proteins of the black elderberry
actually disarm these spikes by binding to them and preventing them
from puncturing the cell membranes.
In addition, the viral spikes
are covered with an enzyme called neuraminidase
which acts to break down the cell wall. It was discovered that the bioflavonoids
which are present in high concentrations in the black elderberry appear
to actually inhibit the action of this enzyme.
Once these properties were
discovered and documented, Dr. Mumcuoglu
formulated a syrup and a lozenge containing these active ingredients
of the
elderberry. The syrup was tested against eight different strains of
the flu
virus (both Type A and Type B) in the laboratory (not in the human
body) and found effective against all of them. Upon observing this success
the Helsinki Committee, a world-wide organization that approves patient
studies, authorized a clinical trial of the product. This trial took
place in
Israel in 1992-93 with remarkable results.
There had been a flu epidemic.
Patients were selected from those with the
virus, and they were entered into the study. These patients were giving
evidence of full-blown flu symptoms as the study began. One half were
given
SAMBUCOL, and the other half were given a placebo. Within 24 hours
of the beginning of the trial there was significant improvement in 20%
of the
patients given SAMBUCOL. Within 48 hours another 75% were clearly
improved, and within 72 hours 90% of those in the study receiving
SAMBUCOL were symptom free. Among the placebo group only 16%
of the patients had shown ANY improvement after two days, and the rest
took at least six days before improvement.
In addition to the flu viruses,
SAMBUCOL is currently being tested
against other viral diseases. Laboratory tests have demonstrated its
ability to inhibit the replication of viruses such as herpes, the common
cold virus, Epstein-Barr Virus, smallpox, and HIV. Clinical trials will
follow in these areas of research which could prove very exciting for
persons
suffering from these diseases.
SAMBUCOL is safe for persons of all ages as well as pregnant and
nursing women. There are no contraindications with any other product
or
drug. If you do have trouble with stomach acid it is recommended that
you
take it with meals. The syrup should be refrigerated after opening,
but may
otherwise be stored at room temperature.
